Comfort Shopping/Shopping as Sport

Boy, have I spent money over the past few days!

I am fortunate...I inherited my body type and metabolism from my father's side of the family. My father's sisters, Aunts Grace and Dot, were willowy, graceful women. Though I'm not quite a willow wisp and graceful is far from the first adjective someone is likely to choose when describing me, I do have that height and clothes seem to hang very nicely on my frame. Wearing clothes well can be a mixed blessing. It helps one cut an impressive figure but it can also lead to genuine disappointment when the package is unwrapped. Ahhh...middle-age!

~~~ I left off yesterday to continue shopping. Sorry for the delay. I feel a little more soothed. ; ) ~~~
My mother and I went out on Tuesday looking for new clothes for Dad's memorial service. I managed to find many lovely articles of clothing. I'm counting on needing a new wardrobe for work soon : ) and haven't bought nicer clothes in over two years, so I'm due. My coup de grace was an outfit I purchased at Boscov's, a local department store chain. I found the items on the $7.99 clearance rack. Certain the Rafaella jacket had been placed on the rack by mistake, I took it to the saleswoman for a price check. What a shocker...it really was reduced to $7.99! And it was in my size, too! (If you think I'm going to put a link to my size, you're nuts!). Hmmm...a pair of Evan Piccone pants in a tiny black-and-white herringbone also on the clearance rack? Also in my size? Nirvana!
Hurrying my finds to the fitting room, I was tickled pink when everything fit. Okay, the pants might have to come in a tad at the waist but, overall, the look was complete. Now, to checkout. Boscov's has a sales pitch called Register Roulette...you can get a discout of anywhere from 10 to 50% simply by checking out. And, paying with your Boscov's charge card doubles your discount! Ka-ching! A 20% discount magically turned into a 40% discount, bringing my total price for those two items to $9.58! That's $4.79 a piece for a designer blazer and pair of slacks.
Now, guys will scratch their heads over this but women will understand. There are few things in life more satisfying than a really good bargain! As many women will never understand 57-inch plasma television screens, men will never grasp the concept of Competitive Shopping. I think if poker can be televised on ESPN and golf can have its own channel, there ought to be a Bargain Hunters' Network! "This Friday on BHN, coverage of the Wedding Dress Event, live from Filene's basement!" Hmmm...the guys might just pass up The World Series of Poker preliminary rounds to watch women change into wedding dresses in the aisles.
Have you ever been to the original Filene's basement in Boston? I was there years ago on a trip to Boston with my son, Mike. Great merchandise. Great prices! I wished there was one in Jersey. Like so many things in life, the spin-off, Filene's Basement, never quite managed the flair and panache of the original.
Nearly everyhing I bought the other day was on sale. I also magaed to scoop up two nice suits (with pants, not skirts) for $60 and $80, one of which will serve for Dad's memorial service. I bought several blouses and tops I can wear with khakis, cords or slacks. Just planning ahead! ; ) I felt a little better after I finished buying. I'd only spent in the vicinity of $300 for my many lovely purchases.
Shopping as therapy. Dad would be so happy for me.
