Cheryl's Firsts

Okay, I think I've got this...

I was tagged by Pam for a list of firsts.

1. Who was your first prom date? Prom? What's that? Actually, I had a chance to go with a young man, a few years my senior, who lived down the street and believed he had a crush on me. Although I loved Skippy dearly, it was only in a sisterly-brotherly sense. Once Skip figured out what I'd known from the moment I met him, that he's a gay man, I bet he was glad I didn't take him up on his offer. Hiya, {{{Skippy,}}} wherever you are!
2. Who were your first roommate(s)? My ex-husband/Michael's dad, Bob. We were both 19.
3. What alcoholic beverage did you drink the first time you got drunk? I remember precisely...vile peach brandy! Then I drank coffee and ate Dipsy Doodles and puked my guts up! To this day, I abhor peach liqueurs. This was also the day I first made out with a black guy. I still remember it fondly. I came home with a hickey and Mom was willing to believe it was a mosquito bite, in mid-November. I was 13 or 14.
4. What was your first job? After baby-sitting? At a fast-food restaurant named Hardee's. Theirs was the original char-broiled burger, and much better than Buger King.
5. What was your first car? Oops...missed one. in 1974, a 1962 Chrysler New Yorker, white 4-door hard top, got 8 miles to the gallon but then gas was $0.29/gallon! I sold it to a guy who was planning to drive it in a demolition derby. Affectionately nicknamed, "Sherman," as in the tank!
6. When did you go to your first funeral? For the mother of a friend (a girl I had a crush on, I realize in hindsight) when we were about 12. We hadn't gotten along very well until then. We got along better after that. I felt so sorry for Ruby!
7. How old were you when you first moved away from your hometown? When I got married at 19. I only really moved away, as in out of South Jersey, in 2001, when I moved to Reading, PA.
8. Who was your first grade teacher? Mrs. Taylor. I remember her clearly. She was a lovely black woman who had a habit of sticking her tongue out when she laughed. She laughed a lot. She gave me a book, The King's Stilts, which I still have.
9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane? High school senior trip to Orlando, Florida when I was 18. I was one of the few able to legally purchase alcohol from the supermarket across the highway from the hotel. Needless to say, I did not buy peach brandy!
10. When did you sneak out of your house for the first time, who was it with? I don't remember ever sneaking out. My parents were trusting and I was trustworthy. I always called if I was going to be later than expected, etc. That and a very innocent face enabled me to get away with a heck of a lot!
11. Who was your first Best Friend and are you still friends with them? Jodie Dougherty, then Matthews then Olive. We remained friends through her move to Kentucky the year after HS, her marriage and earth-mother phase. We lost contact about a dozen years ago. She had found God through a southern fundy church and was actively working in the pro-life movement.
12. Where did you live the first time you moved out of your parents' house? A little aparemtent that had once been a free-standing garage in Vineland, NJ.
13. Who is the first person you call when you have a bad day? If I really just need to talk, Tam. If I'm about to lose my mind, my therapist, Rowena.
14. Who's wedding were you in the first time you were a bridesmaid/groomsman? Only time, her name was Denise and she worked with Bob and I at a healthfood store in Vineland. Denise married a real weirdo, who she divorced a few years later. I did not have good vibes. The bridesmaid's dresses were pretty, though not really anything one could ever use again.
15. What is the first thing you do in the morning? Pee. The coffee is on a timer to brew. Life is good! : )
16. What was the first concert you ever went to? Get ready to be jealous, you youngsters...1973, Pink Floyd at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I saw Bowie there a couple of years later.
17. First tattoo or piercing? Earrings, one per ear, at age 17. No tattoos. I'm considering a, erm, discreet body piercing. : x
18. First celebrity crush? Bobby Sherman
19. Age of first kiss? A little boy named Michael, adorable, pudgy redhead (yes, I have a thing for redheads) when we were 12. "No tongues!" Damn, I just wasted the last 45 minutes looking for a sound clip of that to no avail!
20. First crush? David Nieves-Lopez. Tall, slender, dark, cute. Heck, probably gay, too.
21. First time you did drugs? I thought I smoked pot when I was 14, but realize it was probably oregano or something, in hindsight. First smoked real pot when I was about 16 or 17 and smoked pot and hash fairly heavily until I was 27 or so. Never did anything harder. I was too afraid I'd become addicted.

I, in turn, tag the following (paraphrasing Pam's disclaimer here) without obliging you to respond. If you've already done it, fuggedaboudit!...

Jess

Penny

Yvonne Come out! Come out, wherever you are!

Elizabeth

Cheers!

  • Attractive, huh?

One person who never knew was my mother...because she chose not to! I'd like to say I've grown up a bit since then...I'd like to say that! ; )

  • The whole time I was reading this I was mentally answering the questions in my head and then I saw you tagged me! Sorry about that. I'll get to answering as soon as Blogger stops acting up. Plus I have to write my Thursday American Idol/Lost recap too. Thanks!

  • Hey, Elizabeth...you've got a baby! No obligation, Hon. I'm sure you have more important things to do with your time, like get that little one straightened out after the jump to daylight savings time! And if more important things come up, as I said, "Fuggedaboudit!"
