It's That Time of Year

Gardening time!

Yippee! I get to squat down on my knees, burrow my hands into the cool, dark earth and let rip! I love to garden...I love getting sweaty, love the smell of the earth on my skin, love to feel the cool, moist soil sift between my fingers!

Here's my latest addition...a small flower bed bext to my front steps. I'm thinking about getting some seeds for a vining annual to train up the lattice, something in a coordinating color.

Here's another shot, showing the basement apartment in my building. Tracy and Jason live there, now with their new puppy, Tino. I'll have to get a shot of him. He's simply adorable!

This is why I live in this tiny apartment. This is what I see out my front door. Okay, so the sewer line runs along side the creek and there are a lot of mosquitos in the summer. This is a scant 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia, PA yet I regularly see chickadees; cardinals; nutcrakers; downy, hairy and red-bellied woodpeckers; titmice; mourning doves and a red-tailed hawk. I've heard owls in the woods across the creek at night, a nightingale on a nearby street during summer evening walks. 20 minutes from one of the largest, most vital cities in the country. You can't beat it!

I'm sure to be posting more photos as the season progresses. Last summer, I had the most spectacular Mexican sunflowers and hope to have several more this year. I have azaleas, hostas, daffodils, lilies and glads. I'm planting grape hyacinth (muscari) and anemone bulbs this year. And I always grow tomatoes. The rule states that if you want to continue to claim New Jersey as your home state, you must grow tomatoes. And I am and will always be a Jersey Girl!

Today was the happiest day I can remember in a long time, even though it was a month ago today that my dad died. It was good to feel happy again.
