Proof that Nature DOES Stupid!

I have a window bird feeder in front of my conputer desk in my living room. It's really lovely, seeing the little creatures fly right up there to eat. Mostly I get finches and mourning doves, with the occasional chickadee or cardinal. Rarely, I will get a red-bellied woodpecker there, hanging on the brick surrounding the window to peck at the no-waste feed.

Yesterday morning, I heard a tapping at the window and got up to see if it was the woodpecker, which is always a treat. I carefull pulled back the curtain to find a little tufted titmouse flapping around in the feeder.

I wondered if the little guy/gal was injured...he was hurling himself into the one-way mirror which lines the back of the feeder so the birds won't be disturbed by activity in the house. He flew away when I opened the curtain, so I knew he was fine. I removed the plastic shield that hangs above the feed area because I thought the poor thing was trapped in there and couldn't figure out how to get past the plastic.

Within a half-hour, the knocking returned. Sure enough, it was the titmouse, with no excuse of being caught by the plastic shield. Nope, he was just there, pecking at his reflection and trying to fly into the mirror.

Is he trying to stake his little titmouse claim to my window feeder? Does he think he's found a hot mate? Is he paranoid and delusional? Who knows! But he's back this morning, once again fighting, ranting or making love to his reflection in the mirror of my feeder.

Nature does do stupid.

  • We had a sparrow last year that fought with himself in our carport window. I know he did this everyday for over a month. I kept thinking I would find him dead out there or just simply knocked out. He eventually disappeared, thank goodness.

  • He was probably eaten by that hawk while battling his reflection! If that happens to mine, I hope I can catch it That'd be cool right outside my window, though I'd probably wind up trying to scare the hawk away!
